Breaking the Rules

Intentionally or not, I sometimes find myself breaking the rules of photography. The sunflower below was captured early in my days of photography. Do you think it was framed this way in camera or cropped? Either way, it breaks the rule of thirds by leaving empty space on one side.

Along the Huron River

Four scenes along the Huron River as it flows through downtown Milford, Michigan. We are into our second year since moving to Michigan and are finding new places to explore. It’s great having the conveniences of a big city close by and yet enjoy the quietness of a small town.

In the Midwest, the combination of nature photography and winter has proven to be a challenge. First, most days are gray and without much contrast in light. Add cold temps and high winds on top of that and a great photo becomes difficult.

Just as this sunset says good night to the day, today’s sunrise is ushering in the new year. What is on the horizon for 2026? I am not sure. There are ideas and plans but I have never been one to think of all the details.

The Occasional Sunset

Morning person that I am, it is rare that I am out at sunset. By that time, I am ready to put on my comfy PJs and settle in with a good book. There are exceptions to most things, though. Every once in a while, I catch the occasional sunset.

For this morning’s post, I am taking you from town to town. Three scenes from three different states in the USA. First stop is in Dallas, Texas. The scene above is looking across White Rock Lake from the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Next will be Chicago and Honolulu.

In the Shadows of Trees

Heading down a boardwalk in the shadows of trees. This is a section of the trail 10 loop at the Indiana Dunes State Park. The path opens up to a wonderful view of the wetland. With benches on the boardwalk, it is a perfect place to relax while bird watching.
