Walking over tree covered sand dunes at the Indiana Dunes State Park started my zeal for the outdoors. More than a dozen years later, the thrill of hiking a trail is still there.
” I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than trees.”
– Henry David Thoreau
The image above was capture on Trail #9 at the Indiana Dunes State Park. Another photo captured soon after sunrise along the same trail was featured on “Bursting Through the Forest.“
For this week’s One Step at a Time #15, I spent some time at the Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township, Michigan. This area is quickly becoming one of my favorite spots because of its many nature trails. This time, I decided to try the Chief Pontiac Equestrian Trail. With a forecast of heavy rain soon, I intentionally didn’t stray too far from my car. I was able to hike about two miles before I felt the first sprinkles of rain.
The photo above was taken at the beginning of my hike. The sky was brighter compared to the grayer skies below taken close at the end of my adventure.

This 1.5 mile looped trail with a long boardwalk is one of my favorite nature trails Kensington Metropark. This easy Deer Run Trail can be combined with other intertwining trails for a longer hike.. There are also views of Kent Lake and lots of birds and other wildlife to see.
Jugs with the funniest faces ever. These were made in the Pottery Shop at Greenfield Village – The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. Did they make you smile?
A gallery of Thomas Edison’s Laboratory at Greenfield Village was featured in “Edison’s Laboratory.”
I often wonder as I wander along the trails. This time I was at Van Curler Preserve in Scio Township, Michigan.
It is amazing to see the different stages of growth of a wildflower all in one place. Considered an invasive plant, this pretty plant is a Dame’s Rocket.
Other wildflowers along the trail were featured on “Summer Wildflowers.”
Here’s One Step at a Time #14. My pics today are from a hike close to home this week at Kensington Metropark. With four eggs in her nest, a swan kept a watchful eye on me as I clicked away.

One of many reconstructed historic buildings at Greenfield Village, Cotswold Cottage is my favorite. This is the second set of windows shared in the last few weeks. At first glance, it may look like the windows on the first post, “Threesome of Windows” are the same ones as these. Take a closer look through the windows. You’ll notice that the view to the outside is different. Both images were captured on the same visit.
More information on the reconstruction of this building can be found on The Henry Ford website.
Last week I found beauty on an unexpected backdrop, a dumpster. As I parked my car at the Douglas Center at the Indiana Dunes National Park, I spotted a lovely scene. Butterflies, wildflowers, and birds had been painted on a blue dumpster. Everything in the scene were things that can be spotted along the trails. I regret that I did not find the name of the artist anywhere on the mural.

The first photo was taken in June of 2020 along the Cowles Bog Trail, Indiana Dunes National Park. The second, three months later in October of the same year and on the same trail.
