Gray Morning Light

In the Midwest, gray morning light is the norm on most winter mornings. Add cold temps and high winds on top of that and a great photo becomes difficult to capture.

A solitary tree on a snowy lakeshore, surrounded by ice-covered water and patches of exposed land under a cloudy sky.

There was a day earlier this week that the sun tried its hardest to break through the clouds. I layered up and headed out to Kensington Metropark. Without assurance of what the conditions would be around the corner, I kept searching for a scene that looked interesting. Here are two of my clicks along the trail.

A winter landscape featuring bare trees with a few leaves remaining, snow covering the ground, and a winding path through the forest.

A gallery of landscapes from Kensington Metropark was featured on “Hike, Click, Hike.”

    1. I appreciate your comment, Anne. I didn’t think I was going to have anything to share on this challenge. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. I like the pop of color from the leaves in the gloomy gray that we have right now. January is the cloudiest month of the year in Michigan, specifically January 11th which is the cloudiest day of the year.

    1. So we are heading to more light from now on? Sounds wonderful. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. The lone tree makes a nice focal point, and the monotonous grays and browns of winter can be quite beautiful. Thanks for making the trip!

    1. Good morning, Eliza. The tree caught my attention as I walked up on this scene. I tried several different ways of framing it and decided this was the best one.

  12. Lovely! And gray days aren’t just difficult in the Midwest. I was just thinking the same thing about photographing “New England gray.” Hopefully a bit of snow we’re getting tomorrow will make it more inviting.

    1. I have not experienced New England gray yet but I would love to. A road trip through New England is high on my bucket list. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. Great idea! A New England summer has a lotto offer!

        1. I will keep that in mind.

  13. One could get cold just looking at the images Pepper! Beautifully captured.

    1. Thank you so much, Tina. It has definitely felt like winter the last few days. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thoughtful words accomplish much.
