Looking For the Light

For this week’s Lens-Artists Challenge, Tina has given us the challenge of “Live and Learn.” With over six decades of living behind me, that is a lot of learning to remember. I decided to focus on just one hobby and that is photography, of course! The first thing I find myself doing whenever I go out with my camera is constantly looking for the light. Light, good or bad, changes the results of an image. Better light means better images and also less time and effort spent editing.

After looking for light, the second thing I’ve learned from others is to stop at different places along the trail. Pausing to have a look in every direction has shown me more than a few unexpected images. Often, a path ahead that is full of shadows, is full of light from behind. Looking down has also provided some wonderful shots of fallen leaves. These are some of my results after looking in all directions and searching for light.

What about you? Have you used either one of these ways to see a scene differently?

  4. Light is everything, yes. Once we know, it’s easier to continue! Your gallery here is amazingly beautiful and so well demonstrating your point.

    1. Thank you so much for your encouraging comment. Much appreciated. 😊

  5. Beautiful photos! I also love photography and taking pictures of people to make them feel good about themselves. It makes me feel fulfilled when people like how they look in photos. lol
I appreciate your suggestion of looking down when you have light behind the shadow ahead of you. Thanks.

    1. Thanks! I have never felt comfortable taking pictures of people, unless they are unaware of having their picture taken. Maybe I need to approach it with the same thinking you have – to make them feel good about themselves. I will work on that. Thank you vey much. 👍🏽😊

      1. I’m actually the opposite of you. I feel awkward taking pictures of people I don’t know, but I will go up to people I know and ask to take a picture of them. They get weirded out at first but then they like the pictures. So in my circle of friends and church, I’m known to take pictures.

  6. All truly gorgeous and unique images. Especially love the yellow💛.

  8. Wonderful photos. When I look down usually I just see a mess of leaves, not the lovely composition you managed to extract

    1. Thanks! If I hadn’t looked down, I would have probably stepped on that leaf. It was too pretty not to click. 😊

  11. This is beautiful work. Something similar to what you’re asking about: I’m always noticing how even the smallest change in position can have a dramatic effect on the exposure.

    1. Exactly! Little changes can make the biggest difference. Thanks for commenting. 😊

  12. Pepper, you have provided fantastic examples. Yes, light is everything. As for the question you asked, I do enjoy stopping and looking around me. There are always so many things that can be overlooked without taking time to appreciate your surroundings.

    1. You are so right about overlooking things around us. I am pretty good about looking in front and alongside of me. Looking behind me is what often surprises me. Thanks for commenting. 😊

      1. I remember one time in Big Bend NP when I was photographing a sunset at Grapevine Hills. I turned to look behind me and saw a beautiful Moon in the sky. I never forgot that and made it a habit to look all around me.

        1. Ah, a perfect example of the importance of turning around. 😊

  13. Absolutely spot on – it’s all about the light! Wonderful images illustrate it perfectly.

    1. Thanks! 😊

  14. Excellent post Irene.

  15. Beautiful set of images, Pepper. You’ve conquered that obstacle very well!
