Deep Into a Tunnel

Deep into a Tunnel

How far would you go deep into a tunnel of shadows? A tunnel system in San Juan, Puerto Rico goes down three levels to endless darkness beneath the ground. Castillo San Cristรณbal was built for protection against invasion by the French.

The image above was taken just beyond the entrance gate. The contrast of light and shadows disappeared to continuous darkness as we headed down level by level into the tunnels. A photo of the entrance gate was included in an earlier post “Endless Doors.”

One of the interesting facts about this fort is that, it was also designed to catch and retain rainwater. Incredibly, that system is still in use today! A lot more information on this National Historic Site can be found on the National Park site.
