A Straight and Crooked Path

Earlier this year, I spent some time at Proud Lake Recreation Area in Oakland County, Michigan. The trail I chose took me down both a straight and crooked path across a boardwalk.

You never know a line is crooked
unless you have a straight one to put next to it.

-Socrates

Thinking that in this case, Socrates would have known that the boardwalk below was crooked without the comparison above. Do you agree?

One of Michigan’s 103 state parks and recreation areas, Proud Lake Recreation Area, lays along the Huron River. At Proud Lake, there are many choices of things to do from hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and mountain biking. With plenty of spots for picnicking, pack a lunch and plenty of water.

More photos from the same trail were posted on “A Hike Through Sunshine and Shadows.”

  1. […] Two more images of a boardwalk at Proud Lake were featured on “A Straight and Crooked Path.” […]

  2. Good call on exploring both the straight and crooked parts of the boardwalk! Both are visually appealing in their own way.

    1. Thanks. Both were fun.

    1. Thanks, Filipa.   😊

  4. I’m not sure which one I would choose! Great question to ponder.

    1. Try both? 😊

  5. A bit of a life metaphor. For me, a crooked path is more challenging, but also more interesting.

    1. I agree with you, Sue. The more challenging paths are usually more interesting as well. 😊

  6. Centuries after Socrates, mathematicians figured out how U can tell if U are in a curved space w/o going outside your space and comparing it with a flat space.

    1. Yay for mathematicians. 😊

  7. I’m in total agreement Pepper, …the straight and narrow, …against crooked and wonky, ..πŸ˜‰

    1. When it comes to trails, I tend to try both. In real life decisions, I tend to stay on the straight and narrow. πŸ˜‰

Thoughtful words accomplish much.
