Ignored by Black-backed Jackals

On one of our game drives at Maasai Mara National Reserve, we came across a pack of jackals. Even though these canines are much smaller than elephants, they seemed much more menacing. It was a relief to be ignored by the black-backed jackals.

Looks a little like a wolf, don’t you think? A couple other my posts of African mammals are A Look Back (cheetah) and Unrestrained Yawns (lions).

  1. They are beautiful animals. Maybe it is the ears but they look very alert. I find the black back and tail very interesting. Masai Mara is a wonder-filled place.

    1. Thanks! Maasai Mara was an amazing place to be. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  2. They are gorgeous. I think they look mostly curious and alert.

  3. Great shots. They look like a mix between a wolf and fox.

    1. Thanks! Yes, they do have similarities to both a wolf and a fox which makes for a lovely result. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  4. They look a bit dangerous, glad they left you alone!

    1. Me, too! Our guides were wonderful and we had plenty of warnings about not leaving our vehicles. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. These are wonderful captures.

    1. Thanks, Teresa. So glad you enjoyed them. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  6. They look more like foxes to me… probably equally cunning, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. You are right. I’ve only seen red foxes out on the trail and there is some resemblance. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  7. Interesting markings. Iโ€™ve only heard of jackals but never seen one. Amazing animals and wonderful captures.

    1. haha! That is so true, Cheryl. I had not thought of that and thanks for the giggle! ๐Ÿ˜‚

  9. They have beautiful and unique markings. They do look a little menacing!

    1. I remember them looking a bit more menacing when I was right there in an open safari truck. It might have been that I don’t think I’d ever seen jackals before. They really are beautiful and probably not as menacing as I thought. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. I wouldnโ€™t trust them! Coyotes, wolves, jackals I would bet all have the same tendencies and temperaments. But they are very unique in their markings rather pretty! Thank you for sharing

        1. I appreciate the warning. Better to err on the side of caution. ๐Ÿ˜‰
