From One Spot

Four images captured from one spot at Kensington Metropark in Milford, Michigan. Standing halfway down the boardwalk provided the perfect view of life along Wildwing Lake.

First, on a small island across the lake sits a Great Blue Heron rookery. The tall bottlebrush grass provides a perfect perch for birds such as the Red-winged Blackbirds. On the water, sits the lotus buds covered by beetles and other insects. Finally, a view of a swan nesting in the midst of the grass.

      Thanks, John. Staying in one place for long is not easy for me at all. I headed to this spot because I knew it would keep me busy long enough to meet the challenge. 😉

    Such beautiful captures, Pepper! Amazing how much you found from one single spot. I especially love your image of the Great Blue heron, maybe because I’ve never seen one here in Cyprus.

    These are very nice images from Kensington Metropark Pepper. I think I’ve mentioned before that I follow the Huron Clinton Metropark Photographers group on Facebook and this is the first time I’ve seen the entire Boardwalk – usually it is just portions. I had no idea it was so large. The Swan looks so peaceful, the bugs look so busy! I’ve seen pictures of the Rookery in this Facebook site and sometimes it is loaded with parents, then their young!

      Thanks, Linda. I did get a few captures of some of the baby herons. One or two might pop up in another post soon. Yes, you had mentioned the group on FB but I deleted my FB profile a few years ago. This boardwalk at Kensington is usually lined with photographers on the weekends.

        I’m amazed all the herons fit on top of those branches. I like the group to see “what’s out there” and I don’t doubt the photographers with their very long lenses are out there every weekend. Some of the lenses are as long as my arm – they take pics of each other occasionally. I am really on Facebook primarily for parks, or nature groups … parks, so I coordinate and don’t go there when they have an event (like the Botanical Gardens which has special events, like weddings) or Fairlane which has private events and the entire grounds are off limits. I also follow a few wildlife rescue sites.

          Smart of you to do that! While living in Indiana, I got to know where the less popular and/or unpublished nature trails were. I am still trying to find those here. 😉

            Yes, otherwise if you’re on the Cherry Island Trail, for instance, it is fairly narrow and, if it’s crowded you end up marching single file, plus a lot of other people and/or dogs spook the critters.
