Honey bees? My peony buds always have ants. Was told by a gardener friend that it’s because they love the nectar. And to leave them be….pun intended!
Since this post went live, I have found out that they are not bees at all. Instead, they are mostly hoverflies with a few other flies thrown into the mix. I had no idea. 😮

It’s the belle of the ball for the bees.
Just found out by two fellow bloggers that they are not bees at all but flies. Most of them are hoverflies. I had no idea. 😁

Thanks for the identification, Eliza. I looked up hoverflies after reading your comment. I realized I’ve seen and photographed hoverflies often and have always thought they were bees. Thanks for the correction. 😊
Flies have very distinctive compound eyes and often those little v-shaped antennae coming straight out front of the head. Bees eyes tend to to tear-drop shaped. Just for starters. 😉
