While at the Indiana Dunes National Park last month, I spotted a white lotus along the Douglas Trail.

I have always wondered why the blooms of some flowers last a long time and others are so short-lived. 🤔
Yes, me too. When I first began gardening, back in 1984, I ripped up all my father’s Irises (as they fell over all the time and I hated reaching underneath to prop them up, even with gloves on). I planted tea roses around the perimeter of the yard … one tea rose took forever to bud, then bloom, then a couple of days later, it was gone, petals on the ground. So I took them all out and put in shrub roses which bloom continuously – they are all that is left of my perennial garden now as they’re so hardy. Everything else died after the Polar Vortex of 2013-2014 or was burned in the downed wire fire in 2022.
Wait, what? A downed wire fire? That sounds so scary!
Yes, we had a neighbor behind, two doors down – his big tree died and they wanted $2,000.00 to cut it down … he thought he’d just leave it and after deciding that, a sizeable branch fell down on the power line, which caught the neighbor’s stockade fence on fire, his garage burned down and it burned my garden … he rebuilt the garage, got a new fence, but I decided not to replant my shrubs and perennials I planted in 1985.

Scary stuff … he probably would not have taken the tree down, except for the fire and damage.
When we lived in Indiana, we had a huge tree that died and most of its branches were hanging over utility lines and into our neighbor’s yard. We got a quote to get it cut down. When we told our neighbor that we were planing to get it cut down because we were concerned about it hurting his house, he suggested we call our utility company first. He said they might send their own tree trimmers over because of the danger of damaging the utility lines. Sure enough, that is what happened. The utility company cut down the tree and it cost us nothing. Happiness! 😁
Wow, you were lucky! My two trees in the back garden had started out as seedlings which grew big. They were behind my shed. I went to the neighbor’s house behind me and ensured they did not grow any taller since they were at the fenceline and I couldn’t pull them out. Then the neighbor passed away, the bank bought the house, had a series of tenants with big dogs and I never spoke to them so the trees grew and grew. When DTE came to the house the night of the fire, they hacked up the trees to stop them from burning. They just cut them any which way, so I had to have them removed, which cost me $1,500.00 I think it was and another charge later to have the stumps removed as the tree cutter I used did not have a stump remover machine that could go through the gate. So the whole experience was pretty disheartening.
Yes, it was definitely a blessing to have our tree taken down without any cost to us. The tree was already big when we moved in and healthy. It was twenty years later and huge when it started to wither and had to be cut down.
Yes, you don’t want to worry about it falling over – when we have torrential rains, then high winds, I am very wary of all the big trees around here.
