Chicago’s Aqua Tower is an 82-story wall of windows on all sides. This image of the top 15 floors was taken from high-level hotel room down the street and across the Chicago River.

82 floors!! That’s high..and yes, tricky for the Window Cleaners. Incidentally, I just started with the prologue of a book by Bill Bryson – One Summer America, 1927. He talks about the tallest building in New York – Sherry-Netherland Apartment Hotel which was 38 stories tall and still under construction when the scaffolding for the top 15 stories caught fire and the firemen didn’t have a way to get water to that height! I hope that there are no such safety limitations anymore..

They really must! I can’t even imagine cleaning windows on a building that high. 😮
Me neither! When I worked in the Buhl Building in Downtown Detroit, it was an old building and the windows could be raised/lowered and had no screens. The window washers would clean the outside, then open the windows and climb into each office to wash the inside windows which made zero sense to me … couldn’t the cleaning lady just do it from the inside?
Interesting! Now I am wondering whether the windows open on the modern skyscrapers. 🤔
I’m thinking the windows on newer buildings would likely not open because the Renaissance Center is not all that old – I remember it being built in the 70s when I was going to Wayne State and I read an article about the Ren Cen after the plans circulated about revitalizing it after GM was going to move to the new Hudson’s tower and one of the items mentioned was the hermetically sealed windows. I thought that was interesting as I would favor that type of window as opposed to being in the Buhl Building with their old, creaky windows with no screens.
Good to know. It would probably be an insurance nightmare to have windows that open too.
Yes and I guess I am surprised that the older buildings don’t seal those windows permanently to be honest. Sometimes it was windy and things would blow around and the window washers would be stepping on the ledge inside and outside while you were working, invariably on a rush of some kind. 🙂 When the Pistons and Red Wings won and had victory parades, my office overlooked Hart Plaza where everyone gathered after the parade. I was content to watch the parade from my great vantage point with the window closed, but people insisted on coming in to join me, opening the window and hanging out of the window while all kinds of stuff blew in, like confetti and street dirt.

I wouldn’t want to imagine that. People who live way at the top of those buildings are brave!
At one time, I used to think that it’d be fun living up that high for the view. Now, I’m not so sure. 😁
