I have no idea what this little bug is but I thought titling the post “The Masked Fly” might catch some attention and someone might be able to help me identify it. Do you know?
This insect was no longer than 1/2 inch. It was hanging on to the top of a stalk of tall grass at Moraine Nature Preserve. It seemed completely unaware of me as I clicked away.

I am jot up pj insects so I have not idea what this is. I see i the comment below it may be a Robber / Assassin Fly. Hmmm that would be interesting
That does look like a ‘Robber / Assassin Fly’. They catch and kill other insects – mainly other flies – and have a powerful bite. Nice shot Pepper😎👍

Google identified it as an assassin fly. I didn’t think it was right but after reading your comment I am wondering whether it’s right. 😂
