The Masked Fly

I have no idea what this little bug is but I thought titling the post “The Masked Fly” might catch some attention and someone might be able to help me identify it. Do you know?

This masked fly was no longer than 1/2 inch and was hanging on to the top of a stalk of tall grass at Moraine Nature Preserve. It seemed completely unaware of me as I clicked away.

  1. That does look like a ‘Robber / Assassin Fly’. They catch and kill other insects – mainly other flies – and have a powerful bite. Nice shot Pepper😎👍

    1. Good to know! I may not be getting as close to it next time. 😁

    1. Thanks. It was a fun one to take. 😊

  2. Oh what a lovely photo. 😀 😀

  3. I don’t know fly IDs, but I think it’s one of those fellas that like to land and bite my ankles! hehehe

    1. Google identified it as an assassin fly. I didn’t think it was right but after reading your comment I am wondering whether it’s right. 😂

  4. Great!! Now it works to comment, at least for me. Hope the problem is gone now. 😀

    1. I thought the same thing. Google seems to think it is called an assassin fly but I am not convinced. 😊
