One Trail, Two Seasons

one trail, two seasons

Foliage along one trail, two seasons.

A lush green forest path surrounded by tall trees and dense foliage.

The first photo was taken in June of 2020 along the Cowles Bog Trail, Indiana Dunes National Park. The second, three months later in October of the same year and on the same trail.

A scenic forest path lined with trees displaying autumn foliage in shades of orange and yellow.

Another gallery of colorful foliage was featured on “Fiery Colors of Autumn.”

  1. It’s funny how the landscape can look so different depending on the season. That’s one of the reasons why I enjoy where we live. We get to see the transformation between all four of the seasons. Lovely shots.

    1. Exactly! Having the four seasons is special. 😊

  2. Hard to choose which view is best – they’re both good!

    1. I can’t decide either. Probably one of the reasons I keep going back year after year. 😂

    1. Thanks, Pamela. 😊

  3. Two inviting photographs. I could walk in both and experience their special season. Thank you, Pepper.

    1. Thanks! So glad you enjoyed the images. 😊

  4. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year and you can see that in these photos!

    1. Thanks, Linda. Autumn is lovely in the Midwest. 😉

      1. Yes it is and I have not been to New England to see their Fall foliage, but I have read that Northern Michigan’s leaf-peeping experience rivals that of New England.

        1. I’ve never been to the New England states either. Maybe it is time for a road trip. 🤔

          1. I once thought about a train trip that winds through New England at peak foliage time – it sounded wonderful and, if Mother Nature spoils the vacation with rain, these trips, where you sleep and eat right on the train, has trains with huge windows in each “room” so all is not lost and you still see the colors.

            1. Oh, that sounds perfect! 😁

              1. I think so too, with no weather worries to spoil the beauty. Now it seems the seasons are morphing together, or being so different than what we grew up with, but at least 30+ years ago my mom and I took a trip up to Northern Michigan and everyone advised us what week to go for “peak color foliage time” … we made that trip and got there to find green leaves, nothing had changed yet.

                1. Oh, no! That must have been a little disappointing if the changes of color was the point of the trip. I guess that is always a chance you take when traveling. 😉

                  1. Yes, not one leaf with color – we could not believe it! I don’t have Triple AAA car insurance, but a coworker did and this was before the internet, so she asked for a “Trip Tik” (I think it was called this) which was a detailed look at all the places in Michigan and their peak colors, week by week. So, it was a bust that we went through all that effort and saw nothing. Look at here in Michigan – the leaves hadn’t even fallen down until late November and were not vibrant at all.

                    1. Sorry you missed that changing colors. Taking a train ride like that is still on my bucket list of things to do one day. 😉

                    2. We were bummed out about it and never made it back up north to try again. I hope you get to take that trip Pepper!

                    3. Me, too! If you ever want to try again and need a buddy, I’m up for it. 😉

                    4. Okay, thank you … I’d be leery of trying to guess now because of how our leaves were the last two years with the hot weather – they never turned a vibrant color and lingered forever before falling.

                    5. It is a guessing game every year. I think the only way to be sure is to be ready to head out on a road trip whenever the leaves start changing. 🤔

                    6. Yes, that would make the most sense! 🙂

  5. I love seasonal comparisons like this. Wonderful!

    1. Thanks, Julie. So glad you enjoyed the post. 😊

  6. It nice to see the changes in the landscape. Both lovely photos!

    1. It sure is! It is one of the things I enjoy most about living in a place with four distinct seasons. 😊

  7. I like the cool green, a lovely place to wander. The Autumn changes are a wonder 😀

    1. Good one, Brian. I often wonder as I wander. 😁

  8. Nice both ways!

    1. Glad you think so. This trail is my favorite at the Indiana Dunes National Park.

  9. Beautiful Photos!

    1. Thanks, Gisela. 😊

  10. Pepper, thank for sharing your love of nature photography. Your captured scene reminds me of the landscape from a nearby nature park. Chestnut Metro Park is a wonderful setting to experience the changing seasons.

    1. I appreciate your comment so much. Is Chestnut Metropark in the Columbus, OH. area?

      1. Chestnut Ridge Metro Park is part of the Columbus and Franklin County network of nature parks. It is located about 15 minutes from the community of Canal Winchester.

        1. Thanks for the response. I’ll add it to my places I should visit next time I am in the Columbus area. 😉

  11. Each season has its beauties.

    1. Yes, they do. 😉

  12. Great contrast between the greens and blacks in the first photo.

    1. Thanks, Frank.
