One Step at a Time #16

This week’s One Step at a Time #17 comes from Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Not far from the beginning of the trailhead, I was surprised to see a pop of red appear. Could it be a covered bridge?

Accessible only on foot, this is the Cemetery Road Bridge, originally built in 1886. In order to save it from being demolished, it was moved to this location in 1975.

    That sure is a pop of color in the woods Pepper. Interesting they moved this bridge and that’s a great effort moving it to avoid having it demolished.

      It was so fun being surprised by the bridge from a distance. It was also a huge cost to move it but I am so glad they did. 😊

    Very interesting that when this bridge was moved they also shortened it by 13 ft, from 73 to 60 ft. However, I didn’t discover the reasoning behind the doing it. If you know, please share. I find these little tidbits of information very interesting.

      Great question, Earl. I only found one reference that had a possible answer in an article from the Fairborn Daily Herald. The article published on September 1, 2017, states

      “In the spring of 1974, a tentative plan was made to move the bridge to Glen Helen. Moving the entire 129 foot span was not an option, and so a proposal to remove a 60 foot center section which could then be relocated to Glen Helen on the campus of Antioch College.”

      You’ll notice that it mentions the original span as being 129 feet which is quite a difference from other references. If I find any other information on this, I’ll add it here. Thanks for asking. 😊

    I love covered bridges, so glad this one was saved. My grandparents used to take us through them in New Hampshire in the 70s.

    Nice that they saved it, many are let go. We are fortunate to have one 1/4 mile away that took years to restore. It gets a fair amount of visitors. 🙂

    Such a lush, inviting place, Pepper. There’s so much greenery and I love that old bridge, built in 1886 and still full of character. It’s amazing that it was moved and preserved. It adds a lovely story to your images.
