Nature’s Hitchhikers

While on my African safari at Maasai Mara National Reserve, we came across varied groups of animals. One sighting that became familiar among large mammals were nature’s hitchhikers, birds! Oxpeckers, like the ones below, settled on the back of cape buffaloes, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and other large mammals. I wondered if they were an annoyance to these animals.

At first, I thought the hitchhikers must be an irritation to the animals. I have since found out that these birds, also contribute a valuable service. They remove parasites such as ticks and other uninvited guests.

I am all for avoiding ticks, mosquitoes, etc., but I’d rather not have a bird pecking at me either. How about you? What is your method of escaping annoying little pests?

  4. That one looks like you wouldn’t want to tangle with him!
I imagine the animals are used to the birds and they certainly are helpful removing parasites.
Fresh Catnip leaves rubbed on the skin deters mosquitoes, but 7% DEET is the only thing that works for ticks.

    1. Oh, yes! This cape buffalo didn’t look very friendly at all. I was grateful for guides who knew just how close to safely get to this wonderful animals.
I had no idea that catnip kept mosquitoes away. Good to know! I do try to keep repellant w/DEET in my car at all times. I just never know when I am going to stop to make a photo. 😁
