More Than a Mouthful

An amazing scene that I never expected to experience while in Africa was that of a rodent and a heron. A gray heron was making a meal of a rodent that seemed to be more than a mouthful. This feast took a few minutes to play out at the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

First of all, I didn’t even realize that herons ate rodents. The rodent did not give in easily but the heron was persistent. After a long struggle from both sides, the gray heron was finally rewarded with a meal. The entire rodent was forced down the heron’s narrow throat. I don’t think I would believe it if I hadn’t seen it for myself.

One other surprise for me was that it was a gray heron, not a great blue heron. I have seen lots of blue herons in my part of the USA. With so many similarities, I assumed this was also a great blue heron. I was corrected by our guide that it is a gray heron found in Europe, Africa, and Asia. The great blue heron is also larger, has longer legs, a longer neck, and heavier bill.

Never too old to learn, I am!

I am probably not alone in not knowing that a heron’s appetite is satisfied by more than fish. What about you? Did you know?

  1. What a delight it must’ve been to watch nature in action and to get it in photos!
I also had no idea that herons ate rodents, but I saw a blue heron go for a mouse at a farm last spring, and I was astonished.

    1. I couldn’t believe it either! One of the other photographers on our safari was an avid birder. She was the only one in our group who had seen that behavior before from a heron. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. They have a diverse appetite!

        1. They sure do! ๐Ÿ˜

  2. Lovely observation. It is recorded that grey herons are opportunistic and eat any small animal in addition to fish. But it is one thing to read about it and another to see it. And to see your wonderful photos is pretty close to seeing it myself.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comment. I had no idea how opportunistic herons are since I had only seen herons seen fish before this. I was amazed that it was able to swallow it. ๐Ÿ˜œ

  3. I didn’t know that either, great job on capturing it.

    1. Thanks, Leanne. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  4. Wow, I had no idea they would eat anything but fish! Great pictures Pepper. Maggie

    1. I didn’t have a clue either, Maggie. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  6. Great captures! We’ve also seen a smaller heron trying to make a meal out of a huge bullfrog, He flew away with the bullfrog still in his mouth before we could see the outcome.

    1. Oh, my goodness! Quite a palate those herons have. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Wonderful captures.

    1. Thanks, Rupali. It was quite a sight to see. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  8. That’s my first of a heron eating a rodent! Great shots! I have seen our Great Blue Herons eat frogs, a nest full of baby turtles, tiny crabs, and a dragonfly!

    1. I wish you had been there to see! This was one of those right time, right place, and ready to click situations. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. Wow, those are super cool photos!

    1. Yay! So glad you enjoyed the photos, Lisa. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  10. Gr8 shots! Apart from having a navy blue eye stripe, our great blue herons do look about the same as the gray heron U caught so well.

Our herons eat frogs as well as fish; dunno whether they also eat rodents.

    1. Thanks! I am definitely going to be taking a closer look at the great blue herons when they come back in the spring. I’ve only seen them eat fish. I am so curious now. ๐Ÿ˜

  11. They are opportunistic, if it moves and fits, down the hatch it goes! ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. That just amazes me!

Thoughtful words accomplish much.
