Freedom to Fly

An unexpected but delightful surprise at the Phoenix Zoo was coming across a nonchalant pelican. With the freedom to fly away at any time, this pelican seemed quite happy to stay in the open space of the zoo.

The first two photos were taken from exactly the same distance. When I spotted the pelican, I had my 28mm lens on my Nikon Z7II. I went ahead and shot a few images with that lens. Fearing that the pelican would fly away if I got any nearer, I pulled out my 400mm lens for a closer shot. The second shot above is one of those closeup captures. Quite a difference in perspective between the two images from exactly the same spot but with different lenses, isn’t it?

The last shot was also taken with the Nikkor Z400mm lens, but just a few steps closer. The pelican didn’t seem to mind the attention at all.
