Elegant It Is Not

An ostrich is a huge bird that cannot fly. Elegant it is not and an anomaly compared to other birds. Yet, it catches my attention every time I see one. This ostrich lives in Kenya and is one of the few photos from my African safari that I have been hesitant to post. Have you ever looked closely at an ostrich’s eyes. It has the most beautiful eyelashes ever! Unfortunately with wildlife around, it is not ever safe to get out of a jeep to take a closer shot.

I am wondering, How would you describe an ostrich?

  1. Wow, its neck and leg muscles look strong!

    1. Yup, those leg muscles get them moving really fast. 😁

  2. Nice shot. I wouldn’t want to get any closer to an ostrich though!

    1. I agree! It just looks like I was very close. I had a log lens on my camera at the time. No worries. I was within a safe distance. 😉

  3. Pepper, I like your ostrich photo. It shows the magnificence of this powerful bird. 💕

At a farmer’s market in SE Florida called “Robert is Here,” ostrich eggs sell for $65 apiece. You make a pinhole in top and bottom and blow the egg out of its shell. One ostrich egg makes about 8 servings of scrambled eggs, and the shell serves as a decoration and souvenir.

    1. Interesting! That is incredible. I had no idea about the ostrich eggs. Thanks for commenting. 😊

  4. Not elegant, but it often has a kind of unhurried dignity

    1. “Unhurried dignity” is a wonderful way to describe them. Thanks you for your response. 😊

  5. Wonderful photo, but I have to wonder how an ostrich would describe us.

    1. That is a very good question and one that I had not considered, Pete. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. 😁

  6. That’s a nice photo. I find them imposing and, at times, would even describe them as regal.

    1. Yes, they are a bit imposing. Thanks, Tanja. 😊

  7. I love ostriches and am impressed with this photo, Pepper. Often it’s difficult to get a good photo because they are skittish and can run really fast. I’m glad you shared this photo, Pepper, it’s great.

    1. Thanks, Jet. They sure are super fast. I had my long lens on when we came across this ostrich so I was not very close. It probably didn’t feel threatened with the distance between us. 😉

  8. Bird Fact: An Ostrich’s eye is twice the size of their brain 😀

    1. I had no idea of that interesting fact. Thanks, Brian. 😉

  9. Truly not elegant, not a great beauty, …but, …something other, …💫

    1. heehee! So true. 😊

  10. Lumbering when walking, but quite fast when running! A bit like Roadrunner. 😉

    1. So true and lumbering is the perfect description of its gait. 😁
