Do You Remember?

Do You Remember

Do you remember when gas stations actually had an attendant to pump your gas and clean your windshields? What about the musty smell of old books, handed down from generation to generation? Think way back when travel across the country happened by train and luggage was put in a separate baggage car?

Well, I am sure not admitting to remembering any of these things! I just happened to have spent the day at the Henry Ford Museum where all three of these images captured. Other photos from a current exhibit on bicycles were featured on “Through the Years.”

  1. Doing a little time traveling. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have a funny story about pumping gas because after I got my first car in 1973, I went to the same gas station for many years and they were full serve – they didn’t even have self-serve pumps. I sat in the car like a princess and handed the attendant my key to my locking gas cap, then the money – never got out of the car. When we traveled to my grandmother’s house in Toronto, the 401 Highway gas stations always had full serve. Then my mom and I went up north for a week to see the colors, sometime in the mid-90s. While in a tiny town, I thought I’d stop for gas even though I was nowhere near empty. You had to pump your own gas AND to make things worse, there was no attendant there as it was on the honor system! They had a strongbox and you had to have the exact amount. That was when we had fold-up maps – nothing to tell us where the next gas station was. So we had to sit there, like dumb bunnies, until another person came along to show me how to pump gas.

    1. That is memorable, indeed. Thanks for sharing your delightful story. ๐Ÿ˜‰

We still have some of those folded maps around. My hubby likes to keep them.

      1. You’re welcome Pepper – the gentleman who helped me was amazed I had never had to pump my own gas!

I also have a fold-up map of Michigan, one of the Metroparks, even an atlas of all the states – remember those? We used to get an annual atlas with our auto club membership once upon a time.

        1. Yes, I not only remember an atlas but I think we still have one! ๐Ÿ˜€

          1. Yes, Allstate gave us one every year. I wouldn’t think they’re obsolete – they might be worth something one day.

  2. Gas stations that actually gave service, I do recall.

    1. Me, too! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. I won’t admit just how much of these things I remember! ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Your secret is safe with me. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. I do remember those things, and I still kinda like the smell of musty books, and I’d love to travel a long distance by train.

    1. So do I! Train travel is on my bucket list as well.

      1. I do day trips along the Northeast Corridor, but I’d like to take a long trip at some point.

  5. I love these photos and the nostalgia feelings from them! I haven’t experienced any of them, but I enjoy thinking about them and imagining what it was like to pump gas at one of those stations.

    1. Yay! So glad you enjoyed the photos, Esther. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  6. Yes I do for most ๐Ÿ˜

    1. So do I but don’t tell a soul. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thoughtful words accomplish much.
