Abandoned Amusement Park

Have you ever been to a hundred year-old abandoned amusement park on an island? There’s one in Charlestown, Indiana and I’ve been there! Rose Island is an abandoned amusement park located along the Ohio River. It is accessible by crossing a foot bridge in Charleston State Park.

A century ago, Rose Island was considered the beauty spot of the Ohio Valley. The well-maintained gardens often seen at amusement parks have been replaced by nature along the rustic trails. Left behind are the remains of abandoned structures often hidden in the shadow of trees. Walk slowly through the abandoned park and look carefully through the forest. The beauty of Rose Island is still there along with some mystery.

“Times flies over us,
but leaves its shadow behind.”

– Nathaniel Hawthorne

The trail entrance to Rose Island is short but steep. The state park does have ADA assistance for those needing it. Call the Charleston State Park for more information. To see another image of shadows and nature, click on Sunshine and Shadows.

  1. How bizarre and intriguing. Glad it’s still a park though.

    1. Me, too! I found out about it quite by accident and knew I had to visit it. So glad I did. 😊

  2. Doesn’t look abandoned just by looking at it. Maybe because it is surrounded by very green trees that it looks very fresh.

    1. You are so right about that. The state of Indiana does a great job of caring for it now. From the information I got in Charlestown, the amusement park at Rose Island was at it best in 1923. The downfall started with the Great Depression and then finally shut down after awful flooding on the island in 1937. The land was eventually given to Charlestown State Park so it is now maintained by the state of Indiana as hiking trails. 😊

      1. That’s good to hear. Preserving for its natural beauty as well as for its historical value is amazing.

  3. Looks great. Did you take a long walk here?

    1. We stayed a couple of hours and I wish we could have stayed longer. Planning on going back one day. It was a stopping point on the way from one covered bridge to another. 😊

  4. Looks like a wonderful place to spend time.

    1. It is and I wish we could have stayed longer. Might have to go back again.

  5. So we’re standing in time’s shadow, …Pepper, … such a beautiful thought, … and I enjoyed the green hug and the walk, … courtesy of your camera, …💫

    1. I had not thought of time that way until I came across Hawthorne’s quote. Now I find myself looking at shadows a bit differently. 😉
