A Spot of Red

Spot of Red

Except for a spot of red, a pair of sandhill cranes blend into the background. The cranes were enjoying a casual stroll at Kensington Metropark.

Two sandhill cranes walking on a gravel path surrounded by bare trees and fallen leaves.

A gallery of photos from this same hike were featured on “One Step at a Time.”

  1. blue cranes travel these parts… always alone and not much for company… mystical and lovely…. that patch of red is such a contrast to the brown of late winter… a sweet badge

    1. I have never seen a blue heron. Thanks for stopping by and taking time to comment. 😊

  2. These cranes strolling along in a woodsy atmosphere seems incredible to me, I love it!

    1. Sandhill cranes are a common sight all year round in this part of Kensington Metropark. You should drop by. πŸ˜‰

  3. Oh how unique and beautiful!

    1. Yes, they are and so fun to photograph. 😁

  4. Yes, they do look like they are strolling. I love that bright-red heart on their head(s).

    1. My hubby spotted this pair coming toward us. We stopped and they slowly walked right past us.

      1. You two were lucky to see them strolling so close to you! My first interaction with Sandhill Cranes was as three of them were coming in for a landing – the noise was intense.

        1. Yes, they are very loud. I came across a couple of geese yesterday that weren’t happy to see me at all and they let me know it. Made me wonder which are louder – geese or sandhill cranes? πŸ€”

          1. I think the Sandhill Cranes are loud, but more so when flying then strolling around. I had photos from the last few years of the cranes being attacked by Red-winged Blackbirds. The geese get loud when they all take off or come in for a landing – it is like the lead goose gives directions and they all agree! (Or disagree!)

  5. Such magnificent birds. Lucky you πŸ˜€

    1. Yes, they are magnificent and we get to see and hear them often. πŸ˜‰

  6. So beautiful! Yesterday I was paintings one of them. Today there are two.β™₯οΈπŸ’•

    1. Yes, these two were just a little further down the same trail. We have lots of sandhill cranes at this park. 😊

    1. Thanks, Lynette. 😊

  7. That’s lovely. Cranes are so graceful

    1. Yes, graceful but also steadfast if they expect to get fed. 😁

  8. This is amazing photograph. How beautiful. Thank you, Love, nia

    1. Thanks, Nia. This is one of my favorite trails close to home, mainly because of the variety of birds. πŸ˜‰
