Don’t Ask Me to Type

“I am a Secretary Bird, but don’t ask me to type.”

I came across this fascinating raptor, the Secretary Bird or Secretarybird (Sagittarius serpentarius), at the Maasai Mara National Reserve. According to Google, it stomps its prey to death, so don’t provoke it if you come across one. You’ve been warned!

One unexpected consequence from my African Safari, is an interest in birds that I didn’t have before. Birding takes more patience than I have but I enjoy watching them for a little while. The win for me is capturing a photo of an intriguing bird that I would not have noticed before.

What is an interesting bird you have photographed? Curious in other African birds? Click here for a few more photos from my African Safari.

  2. What a neat bird. Being stomped sounds like a rough way to go.

    1. It sure does! I don’t plan to be in its way at any time. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Great pose! He looks large and it’d hurt for sure if he stomped on ya! How tall is it?

    1. Great question! It looks about the size of a Great Blue Heron. I’ll have to look that up to make sure. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      1. Whoa, that big! I thought it might be on the large size from your photo, what a unique looking bird.

        1. Looked it up. They can grow to be up to 5 ft tall, with a wingspan of 6-7 feet and weigh from 5-9#. I think that is fairly close to a Blue Heron, right?

          1. That is a big bird! Thanks for looking up, Pepper!

  4. Cool looking bird.
