Dry Leaves and Patches of Snow

Bare trees and ground covered with dry leaves and patches of snow. This was the scene yesterday at Legacy Park in Northville, Michigan. It was my first time at this park. With warmth and sunshine, I cautiously walked on snow, ice, and mud. Which do you think was the most treacherous of the three – snow, ice, or mud?

  1. The trees are reaching for Spring!

    1. It does seem that way, doesn’t it? πŸ˜‰

  2. Out of the three choices, I think mud is the worst. At least with snow and ice you can wear microspikes. But there’s no avoiding the mud sometimes!

    1. So true! I was slipping and sliding all over in the mud. 😧

  3. Ice is dangerous, black ice in October sometimes is just as bad as glare ice in Winter. Mud is a pain – I don’t go to the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge too much because of the mud. They have a platform to walk on, but it doesn’t go all the way through the Refuge. Then there are those pesky Eastern Fox Snakes, so I go if I can stay on the cement around the pond. The pond walkway is long and doesn’t have railings. I won’t cross if it is windy. I was walking across it once and a huge carp jumped out of the water and splashed me (luckily not the camera), but it startled me – I could have fallen in. πŸ™‚

    1. That’s a bit scary! Glad you didn’t fall.

      1. I have almost wiped out a few times going around a bend at the Park as the mist comes off the Creek on the one side and you can’t see it. I have seen people fall before when it is slick like that. I often walk off the path and on the grass when it gets colder in Fall or even Spring.

        1. Smart move to walk off the path.

          1. Yes, safer than the asphalt. It’s also bad once the leaves fall at the park and/or in the neighborhood and you have heavy dew making it slick.

            1. Oh, that’s right! I hadn’t thought about that but it’s coming soon.

              1. Yes, I am like a little old lady about walking sometimes. I stay in my lug-soled hiking boots or tall boots until I deem it safe. My neighbor took a bad fall when we had that last ice storm and fell on his back on his porch.

                1. I call that being wise. I wish I had been wiser before falling twice and broken bones while hiking.

                  1. I’m sorry to hear that. I have fallen on the sidewalk walking to the bus twice in the Summer, but did not break anything, but last September, I tripped over a dustpan inside the house and came down hard on my knee. I’m just glad it wasn’t my head that I slammed. It’s probably good I didn’t walk much at all this Winter to give it a break.

                    1. Smart decision. 😊

  4. So little snow left! Tough call, ice is always tricky, but mud can take one down, too. πŸ˜‰

    1. It has been snowing for the past hour so we have a light covering again. ❄️

  5. Mud. By far the most treacherous. Or perhaps, more accurately, mud is more challenging to overpower. Perhaps a reminder to pause, not fight, and seek peace instead. Isn’t it?

    1. On this day, I agree with you! There wasn’t much ice left but I kept slipping and sliding on the mud. I was glad I made it to the end without falling.

  6. Ice I think is the worst.

    1. I agree! Ice is the worst most of the time. On this day, most of the ice and snow had melted so there was mud everywhere.

      1. That isn’t fun, either!

  7. Snow is fun if compacted or right for snow shoes. ❄️ Mud is just a mess that defines “slog” and requires a clean-up. Ice is by far the most dangerous. 🧊 It’s why we own two different types of traction devices (and have worn them a lot this winter).

    1. I agree that ice is the most dangerous. On this day, it was easy to step around the ice. Mud, on the other hand, was everywhere. 😁

  8. All three, Pepper, …they lurk, waiting for the unwary, …( you know, I’m sure I can hear your crunching footsteps, β€¦πŸ˜‰)β€¦πŸ’™

    1. I just knew I was being too loud, πŸ˜‰

Thoughtful words accomplish much.
