A very handsome portrait, Pepper! A white-tailed hornet has the worst sting ever! (You might check the nearby trees for a large paper nest. While they are beneficial insects, once their eggs are laid they defend their space aggressively, so I always give them wide berth! Once frost comes, it’ll be safe to take it down since the tenants will be gone.)

There have been a couple of times that I discovered nests after the trees dropped their leaves and realized just how close I was to them all summer. One was right next to where my spouse parked his car. So they may not be a threat, but it is good to know where they are. Chances are you can just leave them be.

This one was right next to where we have a swing for our granddaughter so I really appreciate your warning.

When I was about 5, I climbed a tree and encountered a nest, so I’m pretty cautious around them now. I don’t kill/spray them because they are beneficial but I like to know where they are!
